REKCID-LS
REKCID-LS is a combination medication containing Rabeprazole (20 mg gastro-resistant) and Levosulpiride (75 mg). This combination is typically used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), acid reflux, and other gastrointestinal disorders associated with excess stomach acid and delayed gastric emptying.
Uses of REKCID-LS
- Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Helps reduce acid production in the stomach and relieves symptoms like heartburn, acid reflux, and indigestion.
- Functional Dyspepsia: Treats indigestion, bloating, and discomfort caused by delayed gastric emptying.
- Peptic Ulcers: Reduces acid production, aiding in the healing of ulcers in the stomach and the duodenum.
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): May be used for treating IBS symptoms related to digestive motility issues.
- Gastroparesis: Enhances gastric motility, especially useful in patients with delayed gastric emptying.
How Each Component Works:
- Rabeprazole: A proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that reduces the production of stomach acid by blocking the enzyme in the stomach wall that produces acid. It is especially effective for acid-related conditions.
- Levosulpiride: A prokinetic agent that improves gastric motility (movement of the stomach). It also acts as an antipsychotic in smaller doses by modulating dopamine receptors, thereby reducing symptoms of delayed gastric emptying and nausea.
Side Effects of REKCID-LS
Common Side Effects:
- Nausea and Vomiting
- Diarrhea or Constipation
- Flatulence (gas)
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Abdominal pain or discomfort
Less Common but Serious Side Effects:
- Hyperprolactinemia (elevated prolactin levels) due to Levosulpiride, leading to:
- Galactorrhea (unwanted milk production)
- Gynecomastia (breast enlargement in men)
- Menstrual disturbances in women
- Extrapyramidal Symptoms (movement disorders) such as:
- Tremors
- Dystonia (muscle spasms)
- Akathisia (restlessness)
- Electrolyte Imbalance: Prolonged use of Rabeprazole can lead to low magnesium, calcium, or potassium levels, increasing the risk of muscle cramps, seizures, or irregular heartbeat.
- Bone Fractures: Long-term use of PPIs like Rabeprazole can weaken bones, increasing the risk of fractures, particularly in the hip, wrist, or spine.
- Vitamin B12 Deficiency: Long-term use of Rabeprazole may reduce the absorption of vitamin B12, leading to anemia or neurological issues.
- Allergic Reactions: Rarely, some people may experience skin rashes, itching, swelling, or breathing difficulties as an allergic reaction.
Precautions:
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult a healthcare provider as Rabeprazole and Levosulpiride may not be recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- Kidney/Liver Disease: Patients with these conditions should use this medication cautiously and under medical supervision.
- Prolonged Use: Long-term use can increase risks of side effects like bone fractures or vitamin deficiencies, so it’s recommended only for short-term treatment unless otherwise advised by a doctor.
Always use this medication under the supervision of a healthcare provider, as both components have potential interactions and contraindications with other drugs.
